AT LAST! AN UP-TO-DATE TAXI SERVICE FOR WELLINGTON. . The first thing that strikes a traveller from overseas upon arriving in Wellington is its prohibitive taxi service. He is used to the wonderful and cheap service given by .the Yellow Cabs in other principal cities of the world. Rather than pay the present high legal fare of 2s 6d, he labours with his bags to the nearest tram. But that will soon be changed. The world famous Yellow Cab system will be adopted under the name of Black and White Cabs, Ltd. The reason for the present high fare is that the passenger must pay for what is called dead running—the mileage covered in calling for the passenger and returning to the taxi-stand after the run. Under the Black and White Cabs, Ltd., system this "dead running" will be reduced by approximately 70 per cent. Depots will be installed at various pointsi .in the city and suburbs, and taxis when completing a run will go to the nearest depot and await another call. Passengers will therefore pay for actual journey only. Exactly similar taxi systems are operating in over 1000 cities, and in every.case pay. excellent dividends. For instance,, in Melbourne, after 12 months' running £1 Yellow Cab shares were quoted at 32s (,■} pneh.
