SONG RECITAL
Prior to breaking-up for the, holidays, most of the music studios in "Wellington are preparing for recitals. Mr. Len Barnes presented his pupils in the Y.W.C.A. Hall on Saturday night before a large audience. An outstanding singer was Mrs. Alice Harris, who sang "Softly Awakes My Heart," which she had to repeat. Miss Dorothy Newman, a young songstress of much promise, saiig" Butterfly Wings," and Miss Lily Mackie pleased with "The Glory of the Sea." The Aeolian. Quartette (comprisiiig Messrs. B. H. Mayall, A. E. Coe, W. IT. Church, and D. Hall) aaug several choruses,- and Mr. Coe gave a song, "Tho English Eoso." Mr. Colin Trim sang "She Alone Charinoth My Sadness," and Mr. Reg. Scott was; effective in "Dedication" and "Bequest." Others who were presented were Misses Greta Revans ("Lullaby"), Myrtle Madtlock ("Golden Dancing Days"), Marian Hamerton ("The Erl King"), Gladys Heath ("One Morninj Very Early"), Emily Macklin ('"Sing,'Break Into Song"), Hilda Roberts ("Like the Damask Rose"), Messrs. E. A. Surtees (" Arise, O Sun"), Alec Stark ("The Two Grenadiers"), Norman Stouppe ("Q Lonely Pines"), Redvers Haymes ("The Sprit Flower), Ray E. Kemp ("Sea Fever"). In addition, Mrs. C. H. Wood sang "The Lament of Isis," and Mrs. C. Goldsmith "Ye Powers That Dwell Below." Miss Muriel Smith's accompaniments were perfectly played. ■
Before Mr. E. Page, S.M., on Friday, Stephen Glanville Cowles was fined 55 la on a charge of negligent driving. Harry Brickmnn 'and Marco William Humphrey were each fined £2 for being on licensed'premises afler hours. Levi Smith, licensee of the Clyde Quay Hotel, who was charged with permitting dninkpniifiss. was fined f)5 %.
