DE LUXE THEATRE.
Spanish love and Spanish revenge provides the theme of "The Spaniard," which opened a week's season to a crowded house'at' the De Luxe Theatre last evening. Pictnrised from the novel of the same name by Juanita Savage, is excellently acted by Eicardo Cortez, Jetta Gondal, Noah Beery, and Matilda Brundage. The story tells how Don Pedro, during a brief stay in London, has feminine society at his feet. On the evening of his .return to Spain he meets his match as a heart-breaker in the English society beauty, Dolores Annesley. The Spaniard's impetuous wooing arouses the resentment of Dolores, and she repulses him hafghtily, but his habitual smiling self-confidence is in no way shattered. While on a visit to Seville, Dolores goes to see a bull-fight, and the girl is humiliated when she recognises the hero of the hour as Don Pedro. Later, during an expedition to the mountains, the heroine is caught in a storm, and is invited to accept the shelter of an isolated castle. She discovers her host to be—Don Pedro. He tell 3 her he intends to hold her a prisoner until she has learned the meaning of love. Then ensues a battle royal be- 4 tween two , strong wills. Dolores is captured by bandits, but is rescued by Don Pedro, who then tells the haughty beauty that she is free to leave him. ■Tl.e hero engages in a bull : fight the next day, and kills the bull, but sinks to the ground after the battle in a dead faint. Dolores discovers that she really loves the masterful Spaniard, and her joy is complete when she sees him .take his rightful place as a grandee of Spa-in. The supporting films include a gazette in which the Prince of Wales's visit to South Afric'jl is shown. The music by Mr L. D. Austin's fine orchestra included "Carmen"' as the overture, Moszkovski's "Spanish Dance" as the entr'acte, and incidental to the screening selections from many notable composers.
