Major the Marquis de Pinedo, Chief of Air Staff of the Italian Military Air Service) ha» just completed the longest single individual flight with one machine on record, by dying to Japan via Australia and back via India. The total length ol flight was over 30,000 1 miles. It was carried out on a Standard Savoia 5.16 flying-boat, fitted with a 450 h,p. Lorraine-Dietrich engine. The technical journal "Flight" on the arrival of de Pinedo in Japan on 26th September, described the flight ds the '"most remarkable aerial achieveihent of recant times." De Pinedo was accompanied only by his mechanic, Ernest Campanolli, carried a minimum of equipment and relied throughout the entire journey on just the ordinary facilities existing at the various points of call. Though the machine was purely a flying-boat, without landing attachment for terra finna, ho made several long traverses overland, including 600 miles across India, without a stop. He flew back via Singapore and In' dia in less than a month.
