S.P.C.A. ESSAY COMPETITION

An essay competition is conducted annually by the'S.P.C.A. with a view to encouraging an interest m its work amon" ths scholars in the schools of the Wellington District. The subject of the essay is "The Humane Treatment of Domestic Animals," The judges have reported upon year's competition as follows :—"We rye of the opinion that the essays sent from primary schools adhere more closely to 1 the subject selected. -Some of the essays from the secondary schools, how. over, show originality ,of thought and qiiainfcness of expression. On awarding places it should, we think, be.stressed that we have taken into account not only writin" composition, and style but aiso tho traces of original thought, and above all the genpral personal interest shown by the writer in animals, their treatment, and welfare."
