AT ADDINGTON YESTERDAY
GREAT BINGEN WINS HANDICAP
BIG TROTTERS' EVENT TO
NAPLAND,
After a threatening morning it was fine for the concluding day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club's Meeting, but a strong southerly accentuated the dust nuisance. There was not tho usual large holiday crowd and money was again scarce. The totalisator investments showed a decided falling-off. The receipts were £68,891 10s, making a total of £177,749 10s for the meeting, compared with £199,883 10s last year. •After the Dominion Handicap an inquiry was held into some interference caused by Nighborn breaking. After taking the evidence of the patrol stewards . and three other drivers it was decided to take no action.
Happy Rosa was a hot favourite, for tlie Governor's Handicap, with Buriue the only other supported to any extent. Happy Rosa refused to strike a gait and Freeman led out from Lonesome, Charles Dixie, Burnio, and Merry Peter. There was little change until half a mile from home, except that Burnie had gone up into third glace. Burnie just led Charles Dixie, Merry Petor, Lonesome, and Lottie Direct at the turn and Charles Dixie breaking up lie let Lottie Direct through, but she failed to reach Burnie by half a length: Charles Dixie was three lsngths away third, and then came Freeman, Lonesome, and Merry Peter. Burnie deserved his success, for lie has trotted consistently right through the meeting. Lottie Direct was a little unluckjy, and with an ounce of good fortune on her side would have won. Charles Dixie,' an ancient grey geldinjr, trotted well. Happy Rosa went off the mark nt the pacing gait and took a king time to settle down. When sindid go right she showed a good deal of speed, August Dillon was a very hot favourite for the Finfield Handicap with Latona best backed of the others, Ben Ohau beinp at n yood price. stands from Rarebell Direct, Darknite, P.ellfashion, Ben. Ohau, Whetu, and Latona. The favourite made a fast run in the back straight "which took him into the lead two furlongs from home, and he led into the straight from King Dillon, Darknilc, Bellfasbion, and Ben Ohau. The last-named came out in the straight,, and quickly heading AuguslcDillon beat him home by four lengths. Darknite was a length away third, and then came King Dillon and Rarebell Direct. Ben Ohau was at a false price considering his good second on the opening day, and he stayed on too well for Auguste Dillon, who showed great speed but was beaten at the end of seven furlongs. Darknite went a very failrace and so did King Dillon. Latona did not improve at all after -getting away slowly. This was not her real form.
' The Kealm-Minton Derby bracket wound up the favourite selection in the ,Christchurch Handicap, with Prince Pointer, Great Binjen, and Jack Potts also well supported. Harry Audubon, Away, Prince Pointer, Jack Potts, and Machine Brick was the leading division until the stands the last time, with Minton Derby and Realm slowly making up ground lost at the start. With six furlongs to go, Away headed Harry Audubon and Prince Pointer, who were followed by Vilo, Machine Brick, Great Bingen, and Jack Potts. Great Bingen made a fast run down the back straight, and at the turn, had headed Prince Pointer, but Away still led. When in line for home Great Bingen came away to win easily by four lengths from Away. Prince Pointer was four lengths away third, and Harry Audubon, Jack Potts, and R^alm next. Great Bingen paced a * great race, and, although he was riot credited with particularly fast time, it was an especially good performance. Away surprised by his good showing, and hung on well considering bis interrupted preparation. Prince Pointer left the • mark correctly, but hardly raced up to his first and second day's form. Realm paced his first mile in 2min 9sec, after goin^ off at a tnngle. Jack Potts should do a good deal better later on. Machine Brick' will win good races in New Zealand when thoroughly acclimatised.
The bracketed pair, Admiral Pointer and Bob Logan, wore favourites for tha Australasian Handicap, Transport, the eventual winner, being at over double figures, and General Bingen a fairly remunerative second favourite. General Bingen, Prince Swithin, Sea Pearl, Transport, and ■ Bob Logan were the leading bunch in the early stages, and with six "furlongs to go General Bingen was still in front of Prince Swithin, Sea Pearl,, Transport, and Bruce; Sea Pearl bj'oke up going out of the straight, interfering with Bob Logan, who was making his run. Prince Swithin led into the straight from Transport, General Bingen, Bob Logan, and Bruce, Bob Logan was the first to drop out, and Prince Swithin, Transport, and General. Bingen were fighting out a close finish when they were joined by Bruce. In a great tussle Transport won by a head from General Bingen, with Bruce half a head away third, and Prince Swithin another head away. Guy Fiuvkes, a long way back, was at the head of the others. It was easily the best finish of the meeting, and Transport paced a very solid race, having to cover a good deal of extra ground round the turns. General Bingen and Prince Swithin were always well pl.icpd. but Bruce and Bob Logan were a little unlucky in the running. Sea Pearl was just coming out to make her run when she skipped and was almost down. Shu continued in the race without a driver.
Young Blake wound up a better favourite than the Napland-Kean John bracket in the Dominion Handicap, oiie of the best races for urihoppled trotters I in the Dominion. Highborn was at a good price for second. Lady Nan reared up at the start, and with Peter Swift was soon out of the race. Young Blake broke up badly before the end of. two furlongs, placing himself right out of court. Marietta, Koraki, and Naplan-d were the leaders at the stands, and when the field had really settled down Napland led Koraki, Bingenette, Nighborn, Bonny Spec, and Pete Peter. Nighborn made a fast run down the back straight the last time, but broke up, interfering with Bingenette, who also lost a good position. At the ,turn Napland led Nighborn and a bunch which included Bonny Spec, Pete Peter, Le Tcdd, Bingenette, and Koraki. Napland ' did not have a great deal of trouble to beat Nighborn by, two lengths, with Bingenette four lengths away third. Pete Peter was fourth, with First Fashion and ■ Bonny Spec next. The winner, who is a five-year-old by Petereta, is one of the best trotters in commission. He went without a mistake all the way, and his backers had no cause for anxiety. Nighborn, when he broke up two furlongs from home, interfered with several runners. He had trotted fairly well up to that stage. Bingenette, Bonny Spec, and Koraki trotted good races in this company. Le Todd was well beaten.
Despite two failures Talaro was made a good favourite for the Hornby Handicap, and he justified this strong support by defeating a good field and going nine seconds better than on the previous day, when he finished second to Queen's Own. Teneriffe began best from Talent, Countryman, Donside, and Bell Harold. Roicole improved his position rapidly, and led past the stands from Teneriffe, Talent, Bell Harold, Countryman, Queen's Own, and Talaro. Bell Harold took charge at the stands the last time from Countryman, Eoicole, Teneriffe, and Queen's- Own, but Talaro made a fast run over the last half-mile, and led into the straight from Countryman, Queen's Own, and Talent. In a, good race to the post Talaro won by a length from Countryman, with Queen's Own half a length away. Donside was fourth, and Talent and Billy Sea next. Talaro paced a great race, which was a very decided improvement on anything he had done at the meeting. He is booked to race at the Otahuhu fixture. * Countryman covered a good dal of ground round the bends, enough to lose him the race. Queen's Own again went a consistent race. Roicole, Bell' Harold, and Teneriffe failed to stay.
Peter Birigen was a very hot favourite for the Lyttelton Handicap, with good support for Becky Logan and Hustler, Prince Lyons being a good-priced fourth favourite. Ramaroa began best from Lincoln Huon and Prince Lyons, but at the stands the order was Lincoln Huon, Golden Sun, Ramaroa, Becky Logan, and Prince Lyons. The order was much the same until half a mile from home, when Prince Lyons, Peter Bingen, and Hustler made good runs. Prince Lyons led into the straight from Bright Bell, Becky' Logan. Hustler, Golden Sun, and Lincoln Huon, but when in lino for home Poinlalena came fast, and ran Prince Lyons, to two lengths. Hut-tier was half a length away third, and then camo Bright Bell, Becky Logan, and Lincoln Huon. The winner was particularly well driven by R. Berry, and to this owed much of his success. Pointalena, and Hustler came with very fast runs in the last two furlongs, and Hustler, in particular, looked decidedly unlucky. Becky Logan went a. very fair nice. Peter Bingen faded out at the end. after showing a good deal of speed over no little extra ground.
The Bonny Logan and Willie Logan bracket carried most money in the Sprinters' Handicap, with Aeron, Kelavan's Quest, and the Fancy Boy-Augusle Dillon bracket nojl in request, Apwti if/uk no lv tilt i'uee, uud JL r iumy iiov
led down the straight from Bellfashion, Auguste Dillon, Landlord, Delavan's Quest, Taurekareka' and Willie- Logan. Delavan Quest and Willie Logau moved up in the back straight, and at the turn Willie Logan just led Bellfashion, Fancy Boy, und Delavan Quest. Willie Logan tired very badly in the run to the post, and Delavan Quest §ot up to beat him by half a length, 'ancy Boy was two lengths away third, and then came Bellfashion and Bonny Logan. The winner did not receive the best of passages, and it was a good effort. Willie Logan failed to just see out the mile, and much the same applied to Fancy Boy. Landlord was never prominent.
