tamed over Mr. C. H. Chapman. It was generally thought that Mr. Chapman wpuld poll very heavily, but as their returns came. in it was seen that the Eeform candidate wa's^ receiving the lion's share of the ballot. In fact the Labour candidate secured a majority in only six of the twentythree polling booths. '' > The results were handled expeditiously by Mr. H. M. Patrick and an obliging staff. The first return, Happy Valley, received at 7.15 o'clock, gave Mr. Chapman a majority of 32, and till the last return was i/ceived at. 8.15 p.m., Mr. Wright practically kept increasing his majority all along the line. There are still 700 absentee votes to be returned and 86 seamen's, but it is not anticipated that they will affect the issue. Mr.. Wright foundjus strongholds at Goldie's Brae, Khandallah, and Northland, where he received large majorities. The largest was at Khandallah where he polled 213 votes more than his opponent. Close voting was returned from Island Bay Lyall Bay, and Miramar. Eouchlv, about 2000 more votes were 'cast yesterday than was tie case in 1922.
