RECEIVING THE RESULTS
AN EXPEDITIOUS PERFORMANCE.
Thanks to the excellent arrangements made by the Electoral Department officials, Messrs. J. Hislop and G. G. Hodgkins, and the General Post Office authorities, the results from the different parts of the Dominion were made available to the Press with great expedition, special facilities and messenger staffs being provided at the G^P.'O. for this purpose. The first return to come to hand waa from Wairau at 7.10 p.m., showing Mr. Girling leading from Mr. M'Callum by 365 votes. Three minutes later, the first returns from the Hawkea Bay electorate were received, followed by Tauranga at 7.15. .The first figures from the Prime Minister's electorate of Kaipara were to hand at ten minutes to eight, showing Mr. Coates with a majority of,over one thousand over his Labour opponent. The first return giving final figures for an electorate outside Wellington was received from Christchurch South at 8.48 o'clock, and the first Licensing figures were received from Wairau at 9.10 p.m. Right up till midnight the rush of results was heavy, but after that hour it slackened off considerably.
The utmost credit is due to the electoral and postal authorities for the dispatch with which the figures were handled. . .
