OUR COMMON CAUSE
We have referred in another article to the dignified and modest message of the Prime Minister to the people, but there is one passage in Mr. Coates's broadcast speech which merits special and separate attention.
For the future (he said) I. suggest that the best course to follow is to bury the political hatchet, put our shoulders to the wheel, and move forward. Without the hearty co-operation of all sections of the community it is not possible to achieve success. There are those who have said that if the Government was returned to power it, would be opposed to Labour, but such a statement is incorrect, since the Government stands for all the people and will endeavour to give effect to the slogan of equal opportunity for the humblest citizen in the land.
This is an invitation to all to drop antagonisms, and, -in- a truce to political strife, to.try what may be done by unity. It is an invitation which comes well from a Prime Minister who has never been a keen party man, nor one to view with favour anything resembling class warfare. We would urge its acceptance in the honest, straightforward spirit in which it is given. Too much time and effort, both in politios and in industry, are wasted in strife and bickering. Mr. Ooatea himself has given an example of what may be achieved by cutting out the argument and doing one's job. If all sections of the community sincerely endeavour to follow this example we do not doubt that many of the problems now subjects of party difference will quickly disappear.
