WINDBAG'S MELBOURNE CUP
(OKITSD PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPIRIGHT.)
s (Received 4th November, noon.)
MELBOUBNE, This Day. The " Sydney Morning , Herald/ commenting on the Cup race, says:— "Bounding: the turn, Manfred forged ahead arid led into the straight; but in the next half-furlong Windbag caught up, and inside.the furlong had Manfrqd beaten.. There was no mistaking, the brilliance of the win.'Manfred ran a good race, but on reaching the straight he began to tire. Pilliewinkie Mas a ■ good" honest horse throughout,. but on the day Windbag was master from the half-mile post. Only once previously, in 1894, has his performance'been eclipsed."
/The ". Telegraph^ sajs: '/At the half-mile it was' apparent that Manfred, Windbag,- and Pilliewinkie had the rest of the field outclassed. Passing the two-furlongs post the. opinion was that Manfred's light weight would enable; him to-win; but Windbag's, magnificent v staying powers overlooked, the advantage.' It was a great; race, arid no' excuse can be offered; for the defeat of Manfred' and Pilliewinkie,; who went down ;to . a better horse." .. ': :
