THE QUEENSLAND CRISIS
ULTIMATUM TO STRIKERS
FARMERS WILL HANDLE CARGO,
(DNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received 29th October, 10 a.m.)
BRISBANE, This Day
Mr. M'Cormack, Pren.'ier of Queensland, telegraphed warning the Mayor of Gladstone that farmers or strikers who committed a breach of the peace will be arrested. The conditions at Cairns are assuming an ugly aspect. There have been several free fights, and disturbances verging on riots occurred near the wharves. Fanners and timber workers are reduced to despair, owing to the holding up of cargoes. A meeting of farmers and timber workers to prepare an ultimatum to the watcrsiders, declaring that unless they resume work on Friday the farmers would handle their own produce. It was also resolved to ask the shipping companies whether, in the event of the farmers guaranteeing the necessary labour to work the ships, they would send ships to Cairns to remove the produce. It was further decided to organise the farmers in the district to give effect to the resolutions.
