MR. SIEVWRIGHT AT NEWTOWN
Mr. A. B. Sievwright continued his campaign as the National Party's candidate in St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, last night. Mr. G. W. Slade presided over a crowded and enthusiastic audience.
After expressing his appreciation for the work being done on his behalf in tho constituency, Mr. Sievwright expounded .the National Parly's policy, which he explained was one of progress and construe lion, lie dealt with the need for increased production of our piima>'y products and closer co-operation between Capital and Labour in order that the general wealth of the country might bo increased and tho pur-, chasing power of the sovereign raised. These conditions combined with a greater economy in public expenditure were necessary before there could bo any improvement in the basic wage. He regretted that his opponent iv this campaign hnd failed to answer the two simple and fair rjuc.itions asked a week previously rcl.'ilivo to the Labour Party candidate's attitude concerning tho ship ping iuild-up. Mr. Sicvwright declared tlinl. all electors wore entitled to know how candidates stood ns regards King mid Empire, and proclaimed himself four-square for the. integrity for the British Empire anil, the Constitution of New Zealand. Among other things, he advocated the maintenance and improvement of the Arbitration Act, ami a maternity benefit scheme on sound lines for Iho wives of (lie workers. Finally Mr. Sicwwri^ht urged al! electors of constitutional and sound views to joir
forces in the electorate and support the candidate whoso platform approximated to their own aims and aspirations.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Sicvwiight. answered a large number of questions, and a vote of thanks and confidence was carried by acclamation.
