LOOKING FORWARD

SYDNEY IN 1967

(FKOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

SYDNEY, 15th October

It is officially calculated that the population of the area at present supplied .with'water by the Water Board—that is, the metropolitan area of Sydney, roughly —will be 1 500,000 in 1931, 2,000,000 in 1941, 3,595,000 in 1961, and 4,150,000 in 1967. The estimated writer requirements of that area in 1967 are given at 250,----000,000 gallons daily. A big scheme, to bring water l>y gravitation to the city, and to supplement the present supply, at a cost of over £6,000,000, is now under consideration. Two other schemes, each at a cost of more thau £2,000,000 are being urged. Sydney is growing at such a pace that the experts are not unmindful of the fact that all the available catchments will be needed before very long. If the £6,000,000 scheme is adopted tho new reservoir will J^ive a maximum depth of water of 205 feet, and will make available an average daily supply continuously of 200,000,000 gallons. The estimated cost of tho combined schemes now before the Water Board is over £11,000,030. The City Council is also talking.of spending millions. If the council carries out the city resumption schemes already approved, as well as additions to the town hall and. the new power house, it will pile up u little debt of £5,015,000. Again, if tho council erects a new'municipal library, and finds that it must widen one of the busiest city streets, as a vital approach to the harbour bridge, that will mean an additional trifle of £3J150,000. One can easily visualise a large debt cloud over the City Council, as these works alone will involve an outlay of about £9,000,----000.
