(UNITED PRESS "ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.)'

(.II'SrR.U.TAX-NEW ZE.IUNI) CABLE-ASSOCIATION,)

(Received 26th October, 9 a.m.)

LONDON, 24th October. ' The competition of Australian wines continues to .perturb the wine .growers 1 of ' Burgundy, and the Dijon Chamber of Commerce purposes to take* steps to counteract it. The chamber objects to the use of the words ""Burgundy", and "Chablis" in describing Australian wines, as being harmful -to tha export trade in wines from Burgundy, and it is requesting the Ministers of Commerce and of l''oveign Affairs to approach the British Government with, a view lo oudiiu; what the chamber calls' "disloyal competition."

This question of place-names as applied to wines is regarded with seriousne.'s by Continental wine producers who are in competition with Australian "ports," "Burgundies," and "champagnes." It is likely to assume international importance. " Tho relative position of Australia as an Empire wine-producer is -shown in the fact that imports of wine into tns United Kingdom from all British pos^ sessions for the first half of this year, amounted to 554.181 gallons, of which Australia snpplie'd-398,860 gallons. Next take the consumption 'of wines in the* United Kingdom for tho first six months' of 1925, and sec where -Australia stands in relation In ■other countries:— Tdrtrfgnl, 3,786;i88 gallons; Spain, ■1,327,816 gallons; France, 1.557,291 gallons; Australia, 335,066 'gallons ; Italy, 312153 gallons; Germany, 130,528 gallon:; ; other British possessions, '127;31 V 4 gallons; other "foreign countries, 104J745 -■gallons.

As showing the growing trade 'in wines in tlic United Kingdom, (ho imports for the half-year t0ta11ed'9,475.871 gallons; an advance of 714,812 gallons over tho corresponding period, of..hist year; whilst homo "consumption was 7,681,101 gallons, a corrcs'noudiiic train of '140,020 gallons. S fc "
