WASHINGTON, 24th Oct. Admiral-Coontz, in officially reporting to the Navy Department on the Aus-: tralian and New Zealand trip, called it! the .greatest and most successful cruise: every attempted by ■the American,navy, i ,He urged that,similar trips should ibe: made every three years. The cruise had shown,that the. efforts .to make thofieetl self-sustaining for six mouths were not' yet.successful, :but were approaching: that state. .While aeroplanes were useful, he had doubts of the usefulness of' dirigibles in major fleet operations. The ■ fleet was in a condition to repeat'the voyage" at twenty-four .hours 1' notice.' Ihe total cost was 515,000 dollars. The .benefits were naval,-national, and-inter-national. ,The Australians and New' Zeal.auders had shown great hospitality. Admiral Coontz urgedthe,. construction of aircraft carriers, and stated that the fleet needed an additional oiler.
