MESSRS. WRIGHT AND FIELD AT
OHAIUU,
Me^rs. \V. U. Field and U. A. Wright, Kcforni candidales for Otaki and Wellington Suburbs respectively, lid dressed a largely-attended meeting at Ohariu on Saturday evening, 'Mr." W. Horrobin presiding.
Mr. Wrighl said (lie former v.-as concerned about the policy of any political
party (hat wus'likely to interfere with his right, to his land, and in this light, he would not bu found supporting any candidate who advocated land nationalisation or socialisation of the hind. There was » "rowing feeling in New Zealand that the sane people, iv town and country must unitedly .stand iiyainsl. tho forces which were likely to retard progress. Wild ami visionary schemes which had failed wherever tried should not bo given an opportunity to take root in New Zealand. It, was all very well to say we should c;ivc tho Socialist Parly a trial fur throe yeai*, and then if their pulicy was unsatisfactory thov could be removed from office. This was a highly-dangerous argument. A Government could in three years do an immense amount of harm, and he urged the electors to vote only for candidates who could bo depended upon to carry out a sane policy under tho administration of a. stable Government.
Mr. Field said it behoved all moderate electors to stand firm and aeo that the Olnki seat did not fall into the hands of an extreme Labourite who had admitted that ho hail been associated with many strikes in New Zealand. By his abuse of Mr. Hnvolock Wilson when addressing the; striking seamen lie had further influenced them, as also had Labour members in tho House. Discussing the Labour land policy, the candidate said it was a most grotesque and ramshackle production, and only the first step towards that revolutionary and disastrous change in our British system of land tenure, (lie socialisation of all land and buildings, and Dominion. Mr. Field dealt with the great strides made in humanitarian legislation by the Massoy Government, and urged his hearers, to support Mr. Coales, whose policy was to continue ami improve upon tho legislation of his great predecessor. . A hearty vote of thanks and conndeuce in Messrs. Field and Wright was carried by acclamation.
