SPORTS MEETING AT NEWTOWN PARK
■ For some years past one of the main attractions on Labour Day hag been the sports meeting. To-day nt Xewtown Park the big gathering is being held under conditions which :ire by no means pleasant. . Tho programme arranged for the meeting is a comprehensive one, and those who. elected to spend tho holiday at tho Park are being provided with some excellent sport. This morning for the most part, was- devoted to warned ladies' and men's raoes and children's events.- Large fields faced the starter, particularly in the races for boys and girls. This afternoon a number of Wellington's leading athletes are to be seen in action in events conducted under IS'.Z.A.A.A. rules. Entries for these events are good, and, in spito of the fact that it will be the iirst run this season for the majority of the competitors, some good racing is expected. Also on the programme for ■ tins afternoon is tho. secondary; schools' championship for the Jsaf' tioual Cash Register Challenge Cup, and primary schools' championships for the Preston and Te Aro Advancement Challenge Cups. Added attraction is provided in the shape of Highland dancing, side-shows, and various competitions.
