'ANOTHER HITCH

THE AMERICAN TOUR

COMBINED COiNJMITTEE'S

POWERS.

Just when matters in connection with the visit of American athletes to jStcw Zealand Hi is season were showing signs of running smoothly, a hitch.,, occurred, aud in ■ consequence there has been further delay this week iv getting down to the work of finalising details for the tour. This is to be regretted, as any further loss of time means that tho prospects of i a visit from Jackson, Scholz, and another American are not improved. Prom inquiries >mado by the writer it appears that the hitch was due to the fact that ,the New Zealand Council' appointed its chairman and its secretary to similar positions on the combined committee to manage the tour. The original proposal from tho council regarding the committee of management for the tour was that there be four representatives of the, council and four representatives of affiliated centres. Assuming that the secretary had no vote, the constitution of the committee would bo such as to give the council representatives an advantage over the others on all matters put to the vote. This, of course, would not appeal to the Wellington Centre, which went to the trouble of making tho tour possible, aftef tho council had been compelled to discontinue negotiations ' through ) lack of' Support. By the latest action of the council there is really no need for any representatives of affiliated centres on the committee of management. The procedure that should have been followed was for each body -—the council and tho Wellington Centre—to-, appoint four representatives,' . and' thoii let the combined committee appoint its own chairman and its ' own secretary. Whatever the result) the council would still control the tour, but the managing? of it would be in the hands of tho combined committee. It is'to be hoped i that by tho' time -these notes aro in print the way will have been cleared for a smooth passage for all remaining details in connection with 'the tour.' ../' V Notes. ' ■ 'The Otago Centre held a meeting ] last Saturday afternoon, and some ' very good performances were registered. Good, fields, were, the ■ order, a big crowd'of spectators being treated to some interesting racing. E. L. A. .Wilson : (one-mile walk; time, 7min 17 l-ssec). • ■: ■ ' ••' ■ As a result of the infantile, paralysis epidemic and the consequent shortening of the school year, it was decided at a recent meeting of the Wellington Headmaster's Association that the primary school sports bo not held this year. This information was received with'•much regret by tho Wellington Centre .'of tho N.Z.A.A. at its monthly meeting on Monday evening. It meant, said Mr. A. C. Kitto, that certain children who had a, chance of coming out on top were not going to be. given 'the opportunity. Tho .big sports; day had come, to be eagerly looked forward to by th.;'school children, and: he regretted very., much tho action taken ,by . tho Headmasters' .Association. Others present voicud their disapproval, and it was resolved to communicate with the J-leadmastera' Association to.see whether it could not reconsider its action. D, C. Ryan, a promising hurdler, and who is still attending We'llinwfoii College, has joined the Wellington Club. Another young runner to join the same club is G. Clementson, who will compete in the middle-distance events. Local athletes will have an e-rcel-lent opportunity of starting off' the season on Monday next, when the liabour Day. sports will be held at Ncwtown Park. Tho entries indicate that a big percentage of. the local athletes arc keen ■ to get into action. The programme is" an. attractive, itud'as varied .as usual, and good sport should bo the order. | Labour Day sports ;.iru also being held .at Lovin on Monday. Tho Victoria College A.A. Club,"which scut a team to last year's sports, will again be represented. Priestly Tracy, Leadbettur, and Hill arc to niakv' an endeavour to retain possession o.f tho Hobson Cup, which they won in tho mile relay la.st year. The New Zealand Council will undergo Home change at its next annual meeting. The Otago' Centre has appointed Mr. ,T. N. Millard to net; in place of Mr. Mazongnrb, and the, Canterbury Centre has appointed. .i\| r . Ausl'ud to replace i\lr. Wilton.' The Wellington Centre's dolpgate.4 will include Mr. "It, W. M'Villy, president of the centre. With regard to gear for local athletes the Wellington Centre hopes to do in the nearJfuture'much more than it has done in past seasons. "If some of the younger clubs were winners 'in the coming- season, it would make this competition keener than ever," states the Wellington Centre's annual report, in making reference to the M'Villy Shield contest. A note of P'nnnks to Mr; and Mrs. Collyer (Athletic Park) and' Mr. 'i-Jrewi-r (fliisin liosorvr.) is continued in the annual report of tlio Wellington Centre. The 'Wellington A.A.
