The centre table at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board presented an unusually bright appearance, says tho "New Zealand Herald." It was" covered by about 200 invitation cards, attractively decorated in water colours, prepared by students at the Auckland Training College, to be forwarded to orphan children at the Richmond' Road Orphan Homo and the Auckland Public Hospital, inviting them to a Christmas party to be given by the students. The front cover of each card 'was adorned by a beautifully-coloured sketch, and no two of tho designs were alike. Several members of the board spoke appreciatively of the remarkably artistic work, and it was decided, on the motion of Mrs. .N". I£. Fcrner, to send a letter of appreciation to the art master of the Training College.

Some very interesting remarks aro embodied in'a report ■of the doings of the Mm Uil Hospital Department in Auckland. It appears that a tract of ;i.bout 1000 acres of suitable land is to be purchased well out of tho town area for (he new buildings, which will be of the

"villa" typo instead of one large building. In the meantime great improvements have been carried out in the old buildings in the way of added ventilation, and. cream or white paint in the.; wards and corridors instead of the former rather, depressing bluish-green shades. A tribute to the good work of the women nurses is paid, which is very gratifying to their sex,' though at the same lime it is clearly shown that no discredit is attached to the male nursing stall. It has been found that even in difficult and recalcitrant cases, the men ore better under the' charge of tho women nurs-s. Tho now building is to nave accommodation for 150 men in an auxiliary part, and these are to bo entirely under the care of women. Dr. Buchanan, at Hokitika'Mental Hospital, has apparently the san\c experience as Dr. Gray at I'oint Chevalier, for he says in a recent report, "Wo have now 50 male patients under the charge of nurses. Tho results aro most gratifying. . ■ . Tho patients have become better behaved under female influence, and in many cases evinced a willingness to work. ... I do not intend to cast

any aspersions. 'on (he. male staff; the changes arc subtle, and entirely duo to the gentler influence of women."

Dr. Elizabeth Omni, speaking ro ceutly at the Wnngiimii Education Hoard, staled tlial in visiting tlin schools '■n the district she, wns impressed with Hit; general physique of tho children.
