RECORDS OF PROGRESS

PHOTOGEAPHS OF WELLINGTON.

A letter of thanks is to be sent from the City Conricil to Lady Johnston, widow of the late Hon. Sir C. J. Johnston, for the presentation by her; of. a photograph of th& Mayor and councillors of Wellington in the year 1890. The framt-d composite photograph was ■on view at tho council meeting on Thursday, and will be given a worthy place among other such records of Wellington. Another interesting photograph on [ view in the chamber was a fine panoramic picture of Wellington Harbour with' tho American fleet at anchor. Alongside it was a similar photograph taken from the-same, viewpoint,, the .wireless hill, but dated 1923, and even in so short a time considerable differences in city and waterfront are very evident. I The council also decided to expend £50 odd in the purchase of a number of pictures of early Wellington out of the amount of £100 which it h.is been authorised to spend in such directions from the Jubilee- Fund, and to purchase a set, of old plans and tracings of portions of the cil.y and suburbs at a. cost of £3 10s. Certain other plans have been donated to the city by the Chief Librarian (Mr. H. Baillie), and to him the council last evening accorded a vote of appreciation and thnnks. Councillor J. Burns, chairman of the Legislation Committee, said that it was proposed to spend the full amount available, £100, upon photographic and other records, and that the photographs should be hung in the meantime in the Wellington South Library. Tho committee would be pleased to hear from any citizens who were willing to assist 'in the getting together of a comprehensive set of pictures and other records.

The Mayor agreed that the photographs were of very considerable value and historical interest.
