Lnng stated, regarding the message ' annourioing Bir Arthur Cocks's resignation, that the Government had decided at a Gab'inet meeting on 9th September: thafi, it would be in the interests of the State if Sir Arthur were lasked to resign, and iv. cable message, "to; that;'effect .was ;di«r; patched to Sir Arthurs; Cocks. . i In reply to a question as.to the (reason actuating the' Government in terminating the Appointment, Mr. Lang Baid that when he reached the Treasury and saw the. manner in which the business of the State had been'conducted,' and the general trying and endeavouring to "fake?' a surplus, it so shook his confidence in SV.Arthur Cocljb that he considered it in the best interests of the State that Sir Arthur should resign.; ■
Sir Arthur Cocks was State Treasurer in the Fuller Government. :' -
When , Mr. Lang, with the Labour Ministry, took office, Vhe launched an attack upon the financial methods of the Fuller Government, which'had esti^ mated a surplus of about half a million for the current year.> ./Mr. Lang 'said that if the Treasury had prepared its accounts in the way an honourable business man wbuld,: no surplus could, be shown. - "Any business," he said, "can show a surplus if it omits from the accounts sufficient liabilities.'' At the beginning! of July Mr. Lang stated that during the official'year ended 30th June the' State's expenditure had exceeded the revenue by £756,449; and the debit balance totalled £3,430,814; ;' ■: ,'." ■ f
