MORE POWER TO HIGHWAY BOARD
A Bill to amend the- Main Highways lAcfc was introduced in the House of Representatives by Governor-General's message- late last night. : In outlining tho contents of the moasirre, the Prime Minister (the Hon. J. G. Coates) explained that it did not uffoct the constitution of the Main Highways Board. It enabled the board to make a greater contribution than onethird, up to, £ for £, for a road mainteuance. It also permitted the board to alter, the basis of contribution in respect to- contributions towards major deviations and bridges, fixing tho policy rato of contributions towards construction cos,ls. In cases- where- .a local body declined to carry out 3 hiahway contract.
or carried it out negligently,.the -power of the board in regard to finance was extended slightly, enabling it to perform the work. .
"Pretty hard, aren't you," asked Mr. R. Masters (Stratford). Mr. Coates said that cases of the kind, occurred,- though seldom. The proposal definitely placed the responsibility upon someone. The other clauses were largely machinery clauses. The Bill was read the first time.. ,
