CLOSELY CONTESTED

HAWKES. BAY B DEFEATS

NELSON.

NELSON, 16th September.

After a fast and interesting game, which was doubtful right up to the final whistle, Hawkes Bay- B beat Nelson at Rugby this afternoon by 17 points to 14. The ground was heavy but the weather fine. Hawkes Bay backs, particularly In: the second spell, threw the ball about with great accuracy; and only good defence prevented scoring. The visitors ■ also had the better df the scrums, obtaining the ball most of the time; but in the loose Nelson more than held their own. The game was noticeable for the large number, of penalties awarded against Hawkes Bay, which, had the most use been made of them, meant victory; but in only one instance was a goal kicked. The first spell ended in favour of the home team, with 9 ■-points to' 6, but soon after resuming, ilawkes Bay scored and maintained the lead to within a quarter of an hour of the finish, when Nelson evened up with 14 all. Kivell kicked a' penalty goal and gave Hawkes Bay the match. Barclay (2), Smith, and Glen obtained trios for Hawkes Bay, Kivell converting one.
