FINALS OF AMERICAN DOUBLES
AUSTRALIANS BEATEN IN MEN'S EVENT.

Williams (U.S.A.) beat J. B. Hawkes and G. L. Patterson (Australia), 6-2, 8-10, 64, 11-9. Patterson served .first, giving two double faults, and losing an important game for the lead. Richards and Williams both foot-faulted in the first set, and the play was only vp 1 to the average, lacking pace, players being all overanxious. Richards's service was the prominent feature of this set. In the second set Patterson again lost his opening service. He was not playing "so well as earlier in the championships. Richards and Williams led 4-2. Then Patterson and Hawkes improved, and took the lead, 5-4, and then the games went with the service till 7-6 was reached. The Australians in the next game had the match point five times, but failed to win the game. Richards foot-faulted in.the eighteenth game, and lost the act. In the third set Hawkes won his service, but Patterson lost his. The Americans were deadly- overhead, and Richards was making few errors, Williams being effective with angle shots. The Americans took the set by consistent, play, Patterson's service again failing. The players opened o,ut iv. the fourth set, Patterson winning tho lead with his service. The Americans, by very fine serving, kept the games equal till' nine all. The Australians had the set point four times, when they were 5-3, anil once when they were 7-6. Hawkes lost his service in tho nineteenth '{jame. ■Williams finishing-the match with perfect serving iv the twentieth game. It was thought that slow tennis would not suit the Americans, but they adapted themselves to the conditions, better than their opponents, and were very consistent throughout.
