At.the conclusion.of tlie race Rose received many congratulations. His hand was shaken again and again, and there were words of appreciation of his performance, such as, "Well done, Rose !" and "you'll do me!" Among the, first to offer their congratulations to Rose were the members of the New South Wales and Victorian teams. The visitors took their defeat in the best of sporting spirit, and were loud in their praise of Rose's good effort. "Gee, but he's a wonder!" said one mud-bespat-tered member of the New South Wales team to a friend, referring to Rose as he left the ground. "He runs so easily and naturally, and with that big stride of his he simply eats up the ground."
