HORTICULTURE

HUTT VALLEY SOCIETY. The first of the season's series of. talks upon the finer points o£ horticulture, which proved so popular with members of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society last year, was given on Wednesday evening last by Mr. C. E. BuokinKham, upon "Narcissi Growing." Mr. H. Poole, jun., presided. The lecturer traced the evolution of the narcissi, explaining the origin of the various classes, "Inconiparabilis," "Barn," etc., also pointing out the differing requirements for a show bloom nnd one for decorative purposes. The method of hybridising and the choice of varieties for the purpose were explained. Tho pleasure derived from growing seedlings was touched on by the lecturer, who commended the hobby to every amateur grower. The method of preparing tho ground and treating the bulbs for eel worm, the greatest enemy the grower has to contend with, were minutely explained. Mr. Buckingham was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
