VISIT TO BORSTAL INSTITUTION

EMPIRE PRESS UNION LADIES' INTEREST. One of the outstanding feature* o! the' visit of the ladies who either accompany or belong to the Empire Press Union delegration is the fact of their vivid and unfeigned interest in the societies and institutions which work for the assistance of women and children in particular and humanity in general. Each of these visitors has special attachment to some cause or other, gome to several, and when they were asked if they would like to visit the Borstal Institution for girl delinquents, which is at Point Halswell, they made opportunity before leaving this morning to go out there, 'llio Minister of Justice (Sir James Parr) was very pleased for tho visit to be made, as also was the Controller-General of Prisons (Mr. M. Hawkins), the latter accompanying tho party. This included "Viscountess Burnham, '.Lady Can-, 51 rs. Moore, who represents several wellknown newspapers on the delegation, and Mrs. Hutchison, of Dunedm. The visitors were received by tho superintendent (Mi™ Simpson), "and with Mr. Hawkins went, all over the three parts of tho institution. They had nothing but cornmcndatiun to give, liiglilv approving of every detail; and offered tho opinion that there is nothing ro thoroughly humane, complete, and practical (o be found anywhere else that ii>ey had seen. They offered congratulations to those in authority, who had schemed out. and carried' through such a fine plan for the help and uplit'tment of' those who have had but a poor chance or atari in life. Lady "Violet Astor was to have gone with the party, also Mrs. HensonInfielfl, but the early hour of starting made it impossible to them owing to other matters.
