OBITUARY

MR. ALFRED JOLLY. The death occurred yesterday afternoon of Mr. Alfred Jolly, general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand. For some time his health had not been good, and he was slowly recovering in a private hospital from a minor operation when he suffered a relapse. The late Mr. Jolly was horn at Kooringa in 1861, and joined the National Bank of Australasia at Melbourne in 1877. He retired after four years' service to enter the Wealeyan ministry,, but when he came to New Zealand in 1894 he joined the National Bank of New Zealand at Auckland, under Mr. (now Sir James) Coates. In July, 1894, he waß transferred to Wellington, where he entered the general manager's department. After three years' service there, he was promoted to be sub-ac-countant. In 1905 he was appointed manager of the bank's Tapanui branch, a position' whioh he held until 1910, when he was recalled to the head office ■as sub-inspeiior. He was promoted inspector in 1919, and in July, 1921, when the late Mr. Duthie became ill. Mr. Jolly was appointed acting general manager. In August, 1922, whun Mr. Duthie retired, Mr. Jolly was appointed general manager, *a post which it is generally admitted he filled with outstanding ability. Though he retired from the Wesleyan ministry early in life, he took a keen interest in the affairs of the Church ■ all his life, and while in Wellington he was for a time, until his medical adviser urged rest, superintendent of the Taranaki Street Methodist Sunday School, and he was a frequent lay preaoher at the Taranaki Street Church, as well as at suburban churches, and at St. Andrew's, The Terrace. The late Mr. Jolly is survived by Mrs. Jolly, a son, Mr. Frank Jolly, B.Ctom., of the Todd Motor Company, and a daughter, Dr. Doris Gordon, who, with her husband, Dr. Gordon, are now on their way out from England. Dr. Gordon and his wife both sat for a special medical examination while fit Home, and both passed successfully, Dr. Doris 'Gordon coming out with the second highest aggregate marks. The funeral will take plaoe at 11 a.m. to-morrow.
