A CIVIC WELCOME

INFORMAL CEREMONY AT STATION A cordial rtcepiion to Wellington vu extended to the visitor* at th« Thorndon Station last evening by representative newspaper proprietor* and journalists from all parti of the Wel« lington Province and from the South Island. Those present also included Bit John Luke, Mr. J. T. Horn, and Mr, E. J. Howard, who toured through] South Africa last year with tha Parliamentary party, and were in close tonoh with Viscount Burnham. They -war* naturally delighted to renew their ao« quaintance with the distingnished Ti*< itor, who also expressed pleasure a* the reunion. Acting on behalf of the Mayor (Mr, 0. J. B. Norwood), who was indisposed, Councillor M. P. Luckie extended a welcome to the visitors on behalf of the city. Councillor Lnckie apologised for the absence of the Mayor, but at* sured Viscount Burnham that the citizens joined in extending a very hearty welcome to the party. Be expressed the hope that during their stay in Wellington the visitors would enjoy better weather than had fallen to the lot of their immediate predecessors—the members of the American fleet. "We thank you very much for you? friendly welcome, Mr. Deputy-Mayor, said Viscount Burnham in reply, "and would like to express the hope that the Mayor will soon be himself again. We have been making *a most wonderful tour of your country, and we. have been, greatly impressed by all we have seen. It has been magnificent. I can assure you we are all very glad that we'are to spend a day or so in your city, as it will afford us an opportunity of having a good look round. Wa thank you for your very hearty wel-. come." Sir John Luke called for three cheer* for the visitors, and these were heartily given. The visitors were then motored to the Midland Hotel.
