DUNEDIN EXHIBITION
NELSON'S REPRESENTATION,
(FROJI OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) N.ELSON, 24th August. A public meeting convened by the Progress League wsis held in the Municipal Chambers on Saturday evening. Mr W J. Moffatt, president of the Wajme, who presided, stated that tna meeting had been called to consider an offer made by the Wellington Exhibition Committee that Nelson incorporate with it, and that the Nelson provincial exhibit at Dunedin should be a court in the Wellington lay-out. The chairman invited Mr. Leigh Hunt, who, with Captain MacdonaJd. had come from Wellington in connection with the oner, to address the meeting. Mr. Hunt said he had always a great interest in Nelson ; he knew it as a province possessing wonderful undeveloped resources, that only needed advertising, when capital would be forthcoming for their development. He imderstood Nelson was undecided about being represented at the Dunedin Exhibition, • and felt sufe that it would be a matter of regret to' Nelson people if Nelson was not represented. Mr. Hunt then went fully into the matter of Wellington's proposal to Nelson, saying that 5000 feet of space was being taken, -and it was possible that 1500 feet more would be taken. ' He did not think that Nelson by itself could make much of a showing with £600, but if Nelson came in with Wellington she would be allotted space in proportion to what she paid for. A plan of the lay-out of the- Wellington court was shown, aaid explained. It. had been suggested that Marlborough should aJso link up with Wellington. On Thursday, next the Wellington Committee would meet to apportion space, and he submitted that there was no time to lose. , -
Mr. Macdonald, organiser for the Wellington Exhibition Committee, gave details of what it was proposed to do ; in the -Wellington lay-out. A lengthy discussion on the position followed, and it was eventually decided : "That it be a recommendation to the Progress League to accept the Weljington offer with the money available, conditionally upon the delegates being satisfied that the project is worth while, and that an effort be made to increase the amount to £1000, and that all present form themselves into a committee to act with the Progress League, with the object of having Nelson .adequately representedl at the South Seas Exhibition."
Mr. Hunt said Nelson would get in on the same terms as other places, and mentioned that the contributions of counties in the Wellington • province were: Featherston £314, Masterton £290, ■■ South Wairarapa £202, Eketahuna £124, and Rangitikei £200. /- ; Messrs. W. J. Moffatt and'W. Dee were appointed to attend the meeting to be held at Wellington on Thursday. A vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs. Hunt and Macdonald ■ for a.U tending.
