DAIRY PRODUCE DISPOSAL
AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND 00-OPERATE. The Federal Dairy Produce Export Control Board of Australia has arrived at important decisions regarding the marketing of dairy produce in the United Kingdom and on the Continent, and for the opening up of new markets. Negotiations regarding contracts for insurance and freights which were opened at the last sittings were advanced a further stage by interviews held with the members of the Marine Underwriters' Association of Australia and with the representatives of overseas shipping companies. These arrangements, which, it is hoped, will be completed during this month or early next month, will compass the whole of the butter and cheeseexported from the Commonwealth to Great Britain and the Continent. The London agency was initiated by the appointment of Mr. J. R. King, who has had an all-round experience with the industry in production, manufacture, and marketing. It is understood that the second member will be chosen at the next sitting of the board, when the Commonwealth Government will select its representative, thus completing the personnel of the board, which should, function in London during November. This body, under direction from the Australian board, will have responsible work of far-reach-ing importance ;to do in Great Britain and on the Continent organising and supervising marketing arrangements. It will co-operate with a similar body appointed by New Zealand, when the full marketing strength of the exportable .surplus of butter and cheese from both countries will be need for the betterment of gelling activities and realisations. • Discussion centred in the objective policy of the board which, under the Act and subject to review as occasion demands, was outlined as "To improve the organisation of marketing dairy produce in the United Kingdom and on tha Continent, and to open up fresh markets, withhold a percentage of butter and cheese as is deemed necessary, and to arrange with tha Commonwealth for the guarantee of advances made upon dairy produce; and take action to establish and maintain the identity of Australian dairy produce in the retail shops and among customers. Among other functions, the London agency, under instructions from the Anstralian board, will work to bring about co-ordination amongst selling agents of Great Britain, and to supervise all sales there and on the Continent, and will also confer periodically with all distributors with a view to the stabilisation and maintenance of prices for Australian butter and cheese equal at least to those ruling for the product of other countries. The agency will also be authorised to expend, such sums as the board may from time to time allocate with thfi_object of bringing Australian butter and cheeso directly under the notice of consumers. Subject to arrangements with the Australian Dairy Council, it is proposed to co-ordinate the secretarial and office work of the two bodies, thus saving office rent and bookkeeping costs.
