YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

The Wellington Competitions were con : tinucd in the Town Hall and Concert Chamber yesterday afternoon and evening. The attendance was large, a,nd the keenest interest was shown in the efforts of the.contestants in the various classes. The comments of the judges and the' marks awarded show that^the adjudicators had considerable difficulty in placing the winners. Following are the finals : — Piano Solo (12.14), "Minuet."—Miss Edith Rait (Wellington), 80 points, 1;■ Sydney Wood (Wellington), 79 points, 2; Miss M. Alexander (Palmerston North), 77 points. The judge Baid that many of the competitors were inclined to force the tone. The winner gave a very neat performance, and had a nice touch. Master Wood had a neat style, but' lacked variety. Song in Character (9-12).—Lottie Colville (Christchurch), 84 points, 1; Joyce Dinnison (Wellington), 83 points, 2; Phyllis Oliver (Wellington), 77; D. Saunders (Palmerston North), 77. "This was an extremely interesting class," aaid the judge. "All the competitors did good work,'and chose items of a suitable naViolin Solo (12-16).—Miss Murie Michelson (Kilbirnie), 86 points, 1; Clifford Dodds (Wellington), 82 points, 2; Miss Veronica 'Morrison (Petone), 80 points. The judge said that tho main trouble' with most of the players was faulty intonation—a fault that could be easily remedied. He had decided to give a special prize himself to the runner-up. He thtMipht she deserved it. Girls' Song (14-16).—Miss K. Baskette (Reretaunga), 83 points, 1; Bertha Dewe (Feilding), 82 points, 2; Maude Dalzell (Wanganui), 81 points. The judge remarked that there were one or two examples of faulty production in this section, but most of the voices were pleasing in quality and the choice of song was good, with one exception. In the case of really promising singers, he point, ed out, the less they used their voices between the ages of 16 and 18 the better for their future prospects of development. Vocal Solo (accompanied by self). — Miss M. Miller (Lyttelton), 89 point*, 1; Miss J. liowry (Otaki), and Miss M. Clegg (Lyall Bay), both 87 points, 2. "There was som eexceptionally good vocalism in this section," said the judge, "with a very fair degree of skill in accompanying." ■ Scottish Song (gentlemen).—M. R. Hill (Wadestown), 81 points, 1; R. Allison (Christchurch). 80 points, 2; G. Howe (Taitville), 79 points. The judge's comment was: "Some very good voices. Those recalled, use their voices well, and there was very little to choose between them. 4 scital with' Accompaniment (ladies). — Miss Mary Coolev (Wellington), 90 points, 1: Miss Thelma Aitkeri (Wellington), 76 point*, 2; Miss Ruby Aitken (Wellington), 72 points. The Judge said that the winner had a beautiful voice, which she used well. She was in a cla«s by herself. The second competitor had a good voice, and put some nice little delicate touches into her work. Recitation (gentlemen).—A. Hurley (Wellington). 80 points, 1; runners-up, Mr. Horrobin (Wellington), 75 points, and B. Stevenson (Wellington), 72 points. Character or Step Dance (under 16).— There wore only two competitors, Jackie Harris and Stanley R-ea (both of Wellington), who received 77 and 70 points respectively. Action Recital (under 16). —Final: Miss Sinclair Breen .(Wellington), 91 points, 1: Miss Esme Evans (Christchurch), 90 'points, 2; Ronald Foster (Christchurch), 83 points. Commenting on the performances, the judge said that the winner's diction was exceptionally good. She was true in character, and she spoke delightfully. Miss Evans also put up a good performance.
