NATIVES AND LIQUOR
HEAVY FINES INFLICTED ON SUPPLIERS.
(»i mioßAFH.—miss association.) HAWERA, 20th August. The serious nature of the offence of Bupplying. liquor to Natives for consumption, off licensed premises was empfiasised to-day in the • Magistrate's Court by Sir. Barton, S.M., when he imposed heavy fines on men accused of that offence. He added that in the next cases of the sort in this district he would impose the maximum penalty. Joseph Dombroski and Kaaki Wallace were charged with the above-mentioned offence, and Gordon Chisnall was charged with aiding and abetting Dombroski. The police stated that Wallace arranged 'with Chisnall to supply beer, which was' ordered by the latter, but found no container available in which to tako the liquor away. Later Dombroski called with a cream can'and 4 took away five gallons of liquor to a Native's residence, where eight Maoris were waiting for it. Dombroski was fined £20, Wallace and Chisnall £15 each.
