CHANGING TASTE
FROM SPIRITS TO WINES.
(DNITED PRESi ASSOCIATION—COPTRIOHT.) (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received 21st August, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 20th August. According to a report by a leading wholesale wine and spirit firm, there seems to be reason to believe that wines are to a large extent replacing whisky as a popular beverage. Last year's homo consumption of wines showed an increase, and amounted to between 15 and 16 million gallons. On the other hand, spirits further declined, the consumption now being about 12 million gallons a year, as compared with,- 28 million gallons in 1916. j Tho demand for spirits is obviously in- ' iluenccd by the high' taxation and the tightness of money. The report adds that Empire wines have /increased in | popularity *nd in demand.
