A WINTER RACE MEETING
AMERICAN VISITORS PRESENT.
Seasonable weather for the Winter Meeting arranged in'-honour of the American fleet was the order of the day yesterday, but in spite of the chilliness in the air, a great many people attended the meeting. Theday was-only fair as to weather conditions, but Trentham course, with its gorse-covered hills, presented a charming picture. There was much soft green on .grass and tree, and a wattle tree was greatly admired by the visitors, its golden bloom setting up a delightful contrast. The Tararua Range, with if-s snow-cap, was another beautiful sight, and the scene from the stands was animated and colourful, the soft rain rather enhancing the picture than spoiling it. Discomfort underfoot was nil." for the greens had been boarded over. The American officers, headed by Admiral Coontz, and the many hundreds of men present, seemed to thoroughly enjoy the outing, and it is safe to predict a record gathering to-morrow as a final compliment to our naval guests. Frockinjc was not lavish, but it was smart and becoming, and that "well-groomed", finish was apparent in most cases.
