MACMILLAN EXPEDITION
DEFINITELY ABANDONED FOR THIS YEAR.
(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received 20th August, 2 p.m.) . WASHINGTON, 19th August. The Macmillan expedition has been abandoned, as there is no hope of carrying out the full exploration programme this year. The parties' activities were curtailed by ico and fog, which has locked the riorthland earlier than usual ■in the winter season. The explorers will now proceed ' to cany out the other objects of the expedition, including scientific investigations from Etah. The change of plan was announced by the National Geographic Society after Commander Macmillan had advised that it was "impossible" to continue the project of establishing an advance base at Cape Hubbard. Commander Macmillan's message describing the handicaps imposed by the weather, said : "Wo have been here at Etah for eighteen days, and two depots have been established, but only ninety miles from the ship's base. We have a thousand miles to go to establish an advance station. Since this must be done within ten days we are now wasting our time in trying to do, the impossible this season, and defeating all the other objects of our expedition." Commander Macmillan paid the highest tribute to Lieut.-Commander Byrd and the entire navy personnel by their excellent work in the face of insurmountable difficulties.
