Although there waa a little sunshine, the'cold southerly wind and rain squalls, with hail, made the weather decidedly unpleasant to-day. The rain which has fallen since yesterday brings the local total to just above the average for the month. It has. saturated the ground to such an exten that most out T dopr sporU were affected to-day, arid a 'number of .fixtures had to bo called'off. The outlook,-'however, is improving, -and it is' expected that better conditions will prevail shortly. The Director of 'the Meteorological Office (Mr. D. C: Bates) reports that the . barometer has risen rapidly, and southerly winds, strong, to gale,- have prevailed, with cold and "changeable weather generally. In the East Coast districts there have been heavy showers, and snow and sleet ' fallen.' The barometer is now very'high,,. 30.50 inches being recorded at Dunedin this morning. South-easterly, .winds, . strong to gale; are likely for a. little while betwe.jn East Cape and Banks Peninsula and about Cook Strait, .and moderate to strong south-easterly . winds elsewhere, with a. further rise in the barometer. There is a prosyect of fair weather being experienced everywhere soon, bu.t for a short period cold and showery conditions may be the order between East Cape and Dunedjn. A very cold night is probable, with frosts inland and hard frost 3in the South;
