The island of Santorm (Santa Irene) called in ancient history Thera, is' one of the Sporades, in tho Aegean Sea. ;I.l> is the crescent-shaped remnant of a largo ancient- volcano, and rises very abruptly, from deep water, so that no 'anchorage, even within the bay, is possible. Tito formation of a new island here is no novelty; threo have arisen within: tho. bay, in historic ■ times, the last being as recently as 1707. ' These islands are • the seat of the present volcanic activity. "Santorin is prosperous, having a consider*, able export trade in wine and in a-min-. eral (pozzolana) which is used in making cement. . :
