MONTREAL, 14th August.

The Australians defeated the Canadians in the Davi3 Cup preliminaries at the Mont Royal Tenni* Club's courts, winning 3-0. In the doubles G. L. Patterson and J. B. Hawkes. (Australia) defeated Willard Crocker and J. Wright (Canada), 6-0, 6-2, 6-4. • In the first set, with Patterson serving, the Australians won the first game 8-6, and the second to love. The .Canadians then became more confidentjjand forced their opponents to the utmost,- but tho Australians succeeded in winning the third 7-5. They then followed with a victory in the fourth 8-6, the fifth 4-2, the sixth to love, winning the set 6-0. The Canadians failed to maintain their pace. The team work of Patterson and Hawkea in the second get went, beautifully. They won the first game - 5-3, and the tsecond to love. The Canadians then rallied," and took the third game 5-3 and the fourth 6-4. Wright's recoveries were spectacular, but the Australians were not to be denied, and took tho fifth game 4-1, the sixth 5-3, the seventh to love, the eighth 4-2, and the set 6-2. The third set was hotly contested, the Australians winning the first game to love, the third 4-2, the fifth 4-1, and ihe seventh 4-3. Canada , took the second game 4-1, the fourth to love, the ei^tli to lov«, and the eighth 5-3. The Australians then gained the ascendancy, and won the ninth game 5-3.and the tenth to love, capturing the set 6-4. * Patterson was ill overnight as a result of ptomaine poisoning, but was f.ufficiently recovered to play.
