FOLK DANCING
AS SKEN IN HYDE PARK,
London was far too hot one day .in June for energetic movement, but the heat did not affect the 650 enthusiasts ot tho English Folk Dance Society who came from all parts to dane«. in Hyde Park, bays tho London correspondent pi, the "Aiaiiuhester Guardian/ One contingent c^mo from Salisbury to join in the afternoon and evening entertainments given by the League of Arts in tht natural amphitheatre-north-of the Serpentine. The women wore white or coloured frocks, and they were as decorative when they sat about on tHe grass under the 'trees us when they "danced old English country dances in the centre of _th« lawn to the accompaniment of a violiniist in a rosy frock. Nothing seemejd to tire them. As soon as a country dance was finished llio men in flannels followed with a sword dunce and then with .Morns dances,:t"he hells at their knees jingling as they danced. Sometimes the other dancers waiting their turn clapped in time with the music, and the public strewn about tlifi grassy slopes and nnder the trees looked as if they would like to join in. Ail the dancers took part, in the final dance, the blind girls and lads, the Girl Guides, and all the sets in uniform colours. The effect was most gay and delightful. ... . ,• .
The last time the Polk Dance Society gave a demonstration for the league was two years ago, and Mr. Cecil Sharp played for them. Last year, because ot his serious illness, Ihere was no demonstration. No charge may be made for admission to entertainments in the Royal Parks, so the League of Arts depends entirely on the sale of programmes for holp towards the £150 which is the averago cost of-the'day's entertainments.
