COMBINATION TOO GOOD
PALMERSTON N., 12th August. The first official team of the newly amalgamated Manawatu - Horowhen.ua Rugby Union met the Southland representatives to-day. The visitors' combination was the deciding factor, together with their superior hooking and the clever game played by Kilby, the half-back. The combined team led by 9 points to 8 at half-time, and the final score was Southland 28, Mana-watu-Horowheniia 12. The scorers for the winners were Preston (2), Alley, Bell, Kilby, Macdonald, and Rice. Richardson and Kilby each converted a try, pnd the last-named kicked a penalty goal. For the losers, Brophy, Corby, and Ransfield scored tries, and Jacob" kicked a penalty goal. Brophy, Winiata, Akuira, and Jacob were outstanding Manawatu-Horowhenua playera. Brophy made beautiful openings, several of which were spoilt' by hanging on. As a curtain-raiser, the Manawatu Juniors beat Bush Union by 23 points to 16s ,
