LONDON, 9th August.
The "Daily Express" says that, owing to the gross extravagance and the defiant attitude of the West Ham Board of Guardians, the Cabinet is discussing the suspension of the board, and Mr. Neville Chamberlain is taking over its functions. The board's accounts show a deficit of £434,000, and it owes the Ministry of Health £1,540,000 for loans and interest. It has now come to the end of its tether, and is unable to raise niore ' loans. All appeals for economical administration of the Poor Law have been fruitless. The district covers Leyton, Walthamstow, and Wanstead, and relief is being paid to 68,495 persons. The maximum rate, 60s a week, is in some cases more than the wages paid in the district for a full day's work. The West Ham rate is now 24s in the £, and the poor rate alone is ss.
