Owing to ill-health, Mr. 0. H. Penny, the American civil engineer who has been assisting in the oil survey work in Poverty Bny, has bad to return to the United States, and a New Zealand student, Mr. Fyfe, has been appointed to assist the geologist, Mr. Miller (states a Gisborne correspondent). Mr. lfyfe, >vho is a. student at the Olago School of Mines, will be arriving shortly and will assist with the detailed survey work which is now being' carried out. It is possible that other New Zealanders will be appointed to assist with tho work as it develops. The recent wet weather has seriously interfered with the detailed survey which Mr. Miller is engaged in carrying out. and reconnaissance work only can. be done during the rainy weather. With the approach of spring, however, the work will be pushed on h's fast ns possible and there will doubtless be interesting developments during the coming summer. A considerable time will have to elapse befqro any attempt is made to put down a trial bore. After the survey work has been completed the results will be tabled and it will then be for the company to decide whether it will put down a test bore and where that bore will be located. The whereabout of Mr. T. F. Bailey, of Wallace street, Karori, whose absence was causing anxiety to his friends; has been satisfactorily accounted for. lie returns to-day from a brief visit to the country. The misearringe of a nieFS.'i.ce advising his movements was tho cause of the inquiries being made.
