MR. ALLAN GRANGER
ONE WHO KNOWS HIM. . (NIOU OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, 30th June. According to a local writer, the Birmingham markets and Fairs Committee feel with legitimate pride that a great compliment has been conferred upon their department, and for that matter upon the 'city, by the selection of Mr.. Allan Granger (the chief inspector of the weights and measures department of the Corporation) to assist the New Zealand Government in the reorganisation of the system of weights and measures in that Dominion. The New Zealand Government applied, as is. usual in such cases, for the services of an expert, and the Board of Trade-chose Mr. Granger. "What he does not know about weights and measures is not worth knowing," says the Birmingham "Daily Post." "His whole life has been spent among them, and his department to-day is just about twice as large as it was in 1895, when 210,000 weights and measures were stamped. Among the inspectors of this country he holds an honoured position, and it may be mentioned that for three years he served as the chairman of the National Society. His help was very useful in the conference that led to the presentation of a report which formed the basis of the regulations in force to-day. "At the Corporation offices of the department Mr. Granger has a museum which is unique. It tells the story, in actual primitive examples of -weighing instruments and models, of the evolution of weights and measures. Among the specimens are a bushel measure, dated 1674, and a working model of Wyatt's first, cart weighing machine. Wyatt, a Birmingham man, was.also the inventor of the first cotton-spinning machine. Mr. Granger's business is, of course, to see that neither by accident nor design are weights^ and scales against the purchaser, or, for the . matter of that, against the vendor, for they must be. just true. The son of a respected member of the Town Council and a trade ■union representative, Mr. Granger is a pleasant companion and happy both in his work and his leisure. He is a linguist, and leading member of the Cosmopolitan Club, and has, moreover, *a bright fund of humour."
