LYALL BAY SCHOOL
The monthly meeting of the Lyall Bay School Committee was held last evening, Mr. J. H. Burgoyne-Thomas presiding. >■ The headmaster (Mr. A. C. Blake), in his report, stated that the average attendence for the last four weeks was 705 pupils; the total roll- was 748 pupils. A circular was received from tHe Education Board inquiring into the apparent fall in grade of the school, owing to the reduced attendance. The circular was subjected to a good deal of criticism by members. It was stated that the board were fully conversant with the cause for the reduced attendance. There were over sixty children on the waiting list, and until the portable school was erected these children were 'hnable to obtain admission. Tho board will not sanction a hall being used as a makeshift until tho portable school is available. The matter was left in the hands of the secretary to frame a suitable reply. Mr. Lindsay, who is in charge of the Newtown Museum, has presented the school with a pheasant, iguana,, opossum, rail, and weasel from the Christie collection. It was stated that the drinking fountain in the children's playground is useless, and the board was asked to remove same, but declined. A further request will be made, as it is considered a. serious menace to the health of the children in its present condition. I A request is to .be made to the board for two rediators for the teachers' rooms. , A sub-committee was appointed to arrange for the visit of the naval officers to the school on the 12th August.
