RICCARTON TRACK NOTES
A large number of visitors assembled at P^iccarton yesterday morning to witness the gallops, but a thick fog hung over practically the whole of the course, and it was impossible to see the horses over about two furlongs, states the "Sun." The discs were "totally obscured. The onlookers ' were compensated to some extent by A few jumping exhibitions, including one by tho much-talked-of Sir Roaeberry. The outside of the course proper was open for fast work, and was in good order. Kilfane was the first to work. He galloped five furlongs, pulling up _ well. Deucalion was treated to a similar task. He is doing exceptionally well, and should he fail to earn a winning bracket during the August fixture, will be hard to beat in some of the longdistance events during the early spring racing. Tiff, Starmist, and Footfall were companions in a useful working gallop run over six furlongs. Sun Up, who looks none the worse for his winning effort on Saturday, sprinted about half a mile. Rich Prize and Serotina wer« associated in a working gallop. Barn Owl went about five furlongs. Mainspring (O. Cullum) and Sporting Girl (A. E. Ellis) jumped four of the schooling hurdles in good style. There was quite a rush to get to places of vantage when Sir Roseberry (A. M'Donald), Cassells (A. E. Ellis), and Frenchman (P. M'Brearty) came out to jump 'the fenceß on the course proper. Starting off over the sod wall, Cassells and i'renchman had a halfdozen lengths' start of Sir Roseberry. The last-named did not jump too quickly at the first fence, but cleared it safely. Continuing on, tha post and rails was negotiated in good style, but at tha first fence of the double all three horses ran about a bit. A good jump at the next fence and then Sir Roseberry started to gather in his two rivals. A furlong further on he was on terms, and Frenchman began to drop back a bit. Caseells and Sir Roseberry jumped the next fence together, half-a---dozen lengths clear of Frenchman. At tho last fence, Cutts's,. Sir Roseberry jumped to the front, Cassells just behind him, with Frenchman some distance back. It was a good exhibition, and in striking contrast with Sir Roseberiy's performance last week, Tuki and Sanforto galloped a mile and a quarter, with Tuki doing the better at the finish. Last Dart and Tarleton galloped five furlongs. ' , ' Vesperua, Centrepiece, and Volant went about half a mile. Many Colours was given strong work on tho «and. His atablemate, Serene, was restricted to easy pacing on the same track. He appeared to be quite all right. Tenterfield and Vagabond went a mile and a quarter, finishing on terms. Moorland galloped about five fur--1 longs. Laughie and Goldtown, separately, '. worked, over about the same ground. ■ Musical and The Cheat were galloped over about five furlongs. Charlatan, alone, galloped a useful mile. Boomerday (W. Rennie) went twice round over the schooling hurdles, but , his exhibition was nothing to enthuse , over. He fell at the second last hurdle, but was remounted and jumped the last . hurdle well. Birkenella was given strong work over a couple of circuit* on the sand, i Santiago and Tinokaha jumped off at , the mile and a quarter post. Lucullent, who joined in over the last seven furlongs, was an easy winner from Santiago, who was a few lengths in front of Tinokaha. Warhaven and His Majesty were companions in a working gallop over about five furlongs. i Te Kawa, held Captain Sarto safe at tlio conclusion of a working gallop run over a mile and a quarter. Windshield and Kilbirnie dashed over four furlongs. Knocklyn and Chickwheat went about the same distance. Ayrburn and Fabrinade went half a mile from the mile post to the ha-lf-ntile disc. Uncle Bob held Ma.ghera safo after galloping a useful mile. Tigerland went seven furlongs at about three-quarter puce. Penury Rose was given a good working gallop over about a mile and a quarter. # Sartist indulged in a short sprint. •
