CANCER RESEARCH

• THE NEWLY-FOUND VIRUS

GERMAN EXPERT'S CLAIM BRITISH WORK ANTICIPATED. (OMTID PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPIRIOBT.I (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) . BERLIN, 2nd August. The "Berliner Tageblatt" gives prominence to a statement by Professor Keysser, cancer expert, alleging that he anticipated Dr. Gye's and Mr. Barnard's recent discovery, and has been defrauded of the fruits of his own labours. Professor Keysser says that in April and May, 1923, as no German money was available for scientific research, Professor Ruppel negotiated with a view to obtaining English financial help for the continuance of Professor Keysser's experiments. Professor Ruppel gave the English negotiators, repier senting the Ministry of Health, a detailed description of Professor Kcysser's results to date. He had found that the exciter of cancer was a filter-passing virus, which could not produce a tumour unless a certain condition of the cells predisposed them to that action. The scheme for English financial help fell through. Professor Keysser adds : "While it cannot bo proved that Dr. Gye and Mr. Barnard were in any way connected with the English negotiations, • it is remarkable that their experiments commence in June, 1923. It is unbelievable that they had not heard of my experiments and the conclusion that cancer is dne to a .uniform virus which is unable to operate unless a predisposing factor is present."
