TO ROSENEATH
MORE THAN A MERE WALL. The plans prepared for the. improvements to be made to the Carlton Gore road show that the retaining walls—the biggest will "be 210 feet in length, rising from nothing to 18 feet in height—will be'more than mere walla, unpleasing slabs of concrete. The main lengths are, as shown on the plans, divided by pillars into bays, and a Maltese cross design at intervals will further relieve the appearance of the upper part of tho wall, this upper part constituting a four-foot balustrade. This will not only be a safeguard against accident, but will serve also to break the \ force of northerlies from across the harbour. A suggestion has been made that provision should be made for steps, in the sea wall to lead down to a little patch. of beach just beyond the kiosk. It is admitted that it is a small beach, but residents, from long acquaintance with it. will bo sorry to see it a few feet below them, but nevertheless out of reach. Though somo of the attractiveness, from (lie Sunday strollers' point of view, of tho rocky foreshore will be lost as a result of the building of tlie wall, the most prominent points will not be affected by the work. • - A good many inquiries have been mucle as to tho intention of the council in regard to the widening of Evans "Bay road in connection with the pavi»s work this year. Though altimatelv tho road may be considerably widened, nwi'saitativic; the removal of certain buildings, boat, sheds and slips, bathing shelters, and so on, <h:it will not be corned out for the time being, probably not for several years, as there is ample width _ for the laying of ' the central bituminous track provided for under the Hutt road extension scheme. It will be necessary to improve corners or bnild out the road here and there, 6ut a general widening is not at present proposed.
