The Post Office Savings Bank figures for the first six months of the current financial year show an excess of deposits over withdrawals of £939,496 11s 6d, as compared with only £87,391 16s 2d excess of deposits for the corresponding period last year. This is regarded as highly satisfactory. The comparative detailed figures are as follow, those for last year being shown in parentheses : — Auckland.—Deposits, £2,776,064 8s 7d (£2,761,755 Is lid); withdrawals, £2,----718,127 16a 8d (£2,810,026 8s sd). The only centres in which there were larger withdrawals than deposits were at Greymouth, Nelson, and Westport, whereas in the previous period withdrawals exceeded deposits in nine different centres, including Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and New Plymouth.
