AUSTRALIA DEFEATED

CANTERBURY SECURES TWO GOALS TO "VISITORS 1 ONE.

(BI TEIIORAPir. —PHESS ASSOCIATION.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Ist August. Canterbury defeated Australia by 2 goals to 1, after a close and interesting game. The ground was in good order, but was not perfect. Canterbury were early on the attack, but a shot from. Sherriff went outside the post. The Australians rallied, and set their leftwing going. Canterbury were swinging the mill about well, both wings attacking strongly, while the visitors were displaying sound defensive tactics. Canterbury^ first goal came when Gracie drew the goal-keeper, and Sherriff scored. Craig was prominent in an Australian attack, but received no support. After the spell the visitors played better, but the home side were able to penetrate, the defence a second time. Ball drew the goalie, and enabled Sherriff to add another goal. Towards the finish the visitors brightened up, and Gray scored their only goal. Abel played his best fi-ame to date, showing his old form, and Craig gave an excellent display for the visitors.
